I’m competitive, but I care. That’s how I would describe my approach to the world of insurance. Growing up in Maine, you might say that I was born into the insurance industry. My dad has been a group rep for 28 years, my brothers and cousins are also reps, so insurance is pretty much a family business for me. A lot of the times when we all get together for family events, we end up just talking about insurance the whole time. As I start in my new role here at Trustmark, I thought I’d share a few of the key pieces of advice I’ve learned from all those insurance conferences disguised as family gatherings.

Life Insurance is Essential and Often Overlooked

I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons growing up in insurance. Lessons that I carry with me to this very day. From a young age, I truly have learned the value and importance of life insurance – but far too often, other people haven’t. I’m constantly trying to talk to my friends about why they need life insurance, even though we’re all pretty young. The need for life insurance doesn’t have a minimum age – that’s why we let families start purchasing coverage for children.

Relationships are critical

I’ve learned that that building relationships is a big part of this industry. The relationships that I’ve built in the past and my family relationships have shaped me and I’ve seen that reflect in my work. I also hope to continue building relationships with clients shape the voluntary benefit solutions that we have available in service of clients. My relationships with my colleagues and with my family have always been marked by trust, by open communication and by sincerely wanting what’s best for everyone – that’s the same relationship you also need to deliver the right insurance solutions to employers and employees.

Company Culture Matters

Coming into Trustmark and being part of the voluntary benefits team is something that truly excites me because we aren’t just here to push policies. A company’s culture is so important – it permeates everything that a company does. The Trustmark sales team’s values align with my values, and they also share my level of passion for protecting employees and supporting employers. The dedicated voluntary benefits team was something that I heard about before coming aboard, but now that I’m on the team, I can’t begin to express the work ethic and determination that I’ve seen since joining. And while it’s great to be a part of the team – it’s even more exciting to be able to share that culture with clients.

All Insurance is Personal

When I think of life insurance and voluntary benefits, I think about when the unexpected hits and the financial burden that follows. It’s very difficult coping with an injury, or an illness or the loss of a loved one, especially when that loved one is the primary earner of that family. Voluntary benefits give you that added protection to know that if the unexpected does happen, you are covered. It’s important we take the time to talk to employers to understand their needs and their employee’s needs.

I’m excited to be a part of the Trustmark team and I look forward to working with everyone and continuing to help our partners deliver valuable solutions to their clients.
