It's Always a Good Time to Schedule a Mammogram

It’s important for women to take charge of their health and stay current with preventive care screenings, including mammograms.

Early detection saves lives.

A regularly scheduled mammogram looks for abnormalities or signs of breast cancer to help identify cancer early when it’s easier to treat. Early detection combined with new treatment options can increase a woman’s chances of survival.

You may be eligible to receive a screening mammogram at no cost.

A screening mammogram is recommended for women ages 40 and older. This preventive care service is covered at 100 percent under your employer-sponsored self-funded health benefit plan administered by Star Marketing and Administration, Inc., in accordance with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations.

A mammogram usually takes about 30 minutes.

If you’re concerned you don’t have time in your busy schedule to get a mammogram, remember, the procedure is usually completed in approximately 30 minutes; this is a short investment of time to take care of your most important asset – your health.

Additional Ways to Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer

Although you can’t change risk factors such as your age or family history, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you can reduce the risk of breast cancer by doing the following:
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Get regular exercise
  • Avoid or limit alcohol intake
  • Discuss risks with your doctor if taking hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives.
If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, talk to your doctor about additional ways to reduce your risk.
